Cold Showers... a Yogic tip for mood boost and health

A few years ago, I began waking up in a funk, which was really upsetting for me because morning was always the time when my mood and energy were the highest. I started researching Kundalini methods to help pull me out of this rut and one of the first suggestions I found was cold showers. I discovered that yogis use cold showers to wake up the body, clear the energy, wash away any subconscious muck that accumulates as we sleep and for many other health and wellness benefits that I have listed below.

I reluctantly gave it a try and have not looked back. For over 2 years, I have been using this method every day and I swear by it. If the positive effects weren't felt instantaneously, I would not have stuck with it. I was always extremely sensitive to the cold but the clearing and uplift that I felt after that first cold shower got me hooked.

Here's how I eased may way in...

My first tip is: don't think about it, just do it. I cold shower as soon as I wake up. I don't give my mind the opportunity to talk myself out of it, I just go for it because I know that I'll be better off afterwards.

Logistics: I don't get my whole body under the water at first, I get in and splash my face and arms and then I'm ready to give my whole body a rinse. "Rinse" is the key word here. This shower for me is 1-3 minutes. It's just a pre-mediation rinse with the intention being to lift my mood and wash away any energy I need to get rid of before I sit for my meditation.

Take it easy: It took me a week or so before I was able to let the cold water run over my back so I suggest being patient with yourself and do it incrementally if you need to.

I did it for the mood boost but it turns out there are many other health benefits including:

Strengthening the immune system

Improves blood circulation

Reduces blood pressure

Improves sleep quality

Strengthens nervous system

Detoxifies the body

I hope this helps- I'd love to hear from you if you try it!
